Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
This may be the most important question on this page. Research shows that the quality of the relationship (aka, "does this therapist get me?") is the biggest predictor of therapeutic success. That's why I offer a free 15 minute consult call, so you can get a feel for who I am and how we get along. Obviously the more time we spend together the better we will know if I'm the right therapist for you, and I recommend at least 3 sessions (with me or any therapist) to determine whether they are a good fit. However, the initial call is the best place to start.
Do I need to have a specific problem to start therapy?
No, you don't. The reasons someone might come to therapy are often called "Problems with Living." That's a broad range of problems, if you ask me. Because we live our lives through our subjective experience (through our psychology), there are millions of reasons why someone might see a therapist. However, there are some topics and populations that I am particularly adept at working with, and you can read about those here.
Your problem doesn't need to feel like a "big" problem either (I write about this very topic on my blog). Even small problems add up over time.
What should I do if I’m unsure about starting therapy?
For most people, if you are considering therapy, it's probably time. Most folks wait and suffer for far too long when help is available. I recommend that you contact me and even if we don't start sessions, you at least have your foot in the door and can get help when you decide you do need it. The first call is free and commits you to nothing. I wrote a blog post about whether you should see a therapist or talk to a friend, which you may find helpful. You can find that here.
Is there anyone you don't see?
Due to practical limitations, there are patients for whom my services are not a great fit. If you need 24/7 access to a therapist, recently left the hospital because of a suicidal attempt or serious threat, need treatment primarily for substance abuse, or are legally required to attend therapy–my services will not be appropriate. I do not provide couples therapy, family therapy, or act as an expert for legal proceedings. For the sake of your treatment, please call if you have questions and let’s have an honest conversation regarding your needs. Finding a therapist is hard–I would rather help you find someone who will be a good fit than to discover after several sessions that my services aren’t going to be adequate.
